Winter Weekends in Greece

When it comes to vacationing in Greece your mind probably automatically wanders to images of endless blue waters and skies, sun, sea, sand, and those beautiful white washed buildings and bright blue colored domes. And you would be right about all of the summertime. What you may not know is that Greece also has some pretty amazing winter weekend destinations as well. If this is surprising to you, you are definitley not alone. Greece is such a popular summertime destination that tourism during the winter months is often treated like an afterthought. Think mountains and lakes, snow, and ski areas, private guest houses and chalets nestled into the hills of little villages steeped in history and anqitquity. From Arachova to Zagoraxwria to Ioannina and beyond check out what's on tap this winter in Greece...

Winter Weekend Greece-Ioannina

A bustling city just 50 minutes outside of Athens by plane Ioannina is a juxtaposition of old world charm and modern day style. If you are looking for a place to stay that is centrally located and that has all the amenities you need to stay at The Grand Serai in the heart of Ioannina. This hotel and conference center is a 5 star property that offers luxuruiously appointed guest rooms, a pool, spa, and gym as well as conference facilities and full catering. Once you have made your hotel reservations you can enjoy exploring the city. Take a daytime stroll by Lake Ioannina where you can take in the sights, pop into local shops and cafes, or take a quick boat ride to the small island in the center of the lake known as Nisaki. A must do in Ioannnina is to take a trip to visit Vikos Gorge. Located in Zagorochoria, this gorge is the world's deepest and is truly an amazing sight. You can take in unforgetable views of the mountains, hike the canyons and nature trails and get some really fabulous photo ops in the process. Vikos Water, my favorite water and the best bottled water company in Greece sources it's natural mineral water in the areas surrounding Vikos Canyon.

Winter Weekend Greece-Arachova

To give you the best idea possible, you can consider this mountainside town nestled at the foot of Mt. Parnassos the Vail of Greece. Arachova is a super popular destination for the cosmopolitan set. Winter activities abound from skiing, and snowboarding to trail riding, hiking, cycling, and even hot thermal spas, Arachova has something for everyone. If you aren't into the great outdoors you can stay inside and enjoy cocktails by the fire at one of the many mountainside bars or tavernas. Quite possibly one of the most unique and authentic is Sehre located at Lakka Square. Warm and inviting, Sehre Cafe and Bar is a welcome respite after a long day on the mountain. Sip cocktails in true ski chalet style and enjoy the hospitality of the two brother team that call Sehre their own. Le Sapin is another must see....super sleek, stylish, with a fabulous French inspired menu and even more fabulous cocktails...

Winter Weekend Greece-Delfi

Just a few minutes down the road from the center of Arachova, this small village comes with all the same old world charm without the hefty price tag that you will have to pay if you are staying in Arachova. There are a few large hotels, but most are smaller, family run establishments where you feel like you truly came home for the holidays. Delfi is filled with quaint shops, restaurants, and tavernas that are all centrally located. You can't come to Delfi and not visit the Temple of Apollo. It's a great day trip during your stay in this beautiful village.  Delfi also has a number of amazingly beautiful churches that you can explore as well as tons of outdoor activities. So picturesque, fresh mountain air, amazing local food and sweets.....a perfect winter getaway....
